It is a great honor for me to be responsible for the initiation, and establishment of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Faculty of Pharmacy Helwan University. The Department started in September 2003, in response to the increased demand for clinical pharmacy services and to prepare our undergraduate and postgraduate students for the new responsibilities and future needs. Our department offers Post-Graduate Diploma, Master and PhD Degrees in Clinical Pharmacy. Also, the department provides Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Degree, through a bridge course as Post-baccalaureate PharmD for BPharm graduates. The department activities are extended to the University Hospitals [Badr and 15 MAY Hospitals], Cairo, other Universities’ Hospitals and Ministry of Health’ Hospitals. The expanding roles of our department include the application of evidence-based medicine towards patient safety, pharmaceutical care, clinical research in disease management, and continuing pharmacy education programs. The department research plans usually comprise many research areas including treatment protocols for varieties of diseases. Each protocol depending principally on improving patients Quality of Life through patient education and preparation of guidelines for effective, safe, and economic use of medications. The Department has the expertise to take up projects in the areas of Pharmacogenomics, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Population Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacometrics, Drug Utilization Evaluation, Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring. Our department members are available to share activities in any practice area.
