Faculty of Pharmacy, Helwan University organizes a workshop on Green Analytical Chemistry Assessment.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Helwan University, organized a workshop on Green Analytical Chemistry Assessment. The event was held under the patronage of Dr. El-Sayed Kandil, President of Helwan University; Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy; and Dr. Mohamed Abdo Khedr, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research.

The workshop was prepared and organized by the staff of the Pharmaceutical Services Unit, Prof. Dr. Sahar Abdel Mohsen and Dr. Marwa Azab, in collaboration with the Department of Analytical Chemistry, represented by Assistant Lecturer Dina Abdel Fattah, under the supervision of the Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Maha Abu Al-Alamein.

The workshop aimed to:

  • Empower through knowledge: Enable participants to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to integrate green analytical techniques into their research and laboratory work.

  • Encourage innovation: Stimulate new ideas and approaches in sustainable chemistry by showcasing the latest advancements in green analytical metrics.

  • Promote sustainability in scientific research: Motivate researchers to prioritize sustainability in experimental design and to focus on environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional chemical processes.

  • Elevate the status of green chemistry metrics: Advocate for the integration of green analytical assessment tools as a standard practice within the scientific community.

  • Hands-on learning: Provide practical training on applying green chemistry metrics in real laboratory settings.

The workshop covered:

  • An introduction to green analytical chemistry (an overview of the role of sustainability in analytical chemistry and the importance of green metrics)

  • Learning how to evaluate the environmental impact of analytical procedures using the Analytical Eco-Scale method

  • Practical application of the Analytical Eco-Scale

  • Presentation of the GAPI (Green Analytical Procedure Index) – a tool used to evaluate green chemistry practices in analytical methods

  • Hands-on application of the GAPI tool and real-life examples of its use in practical scenarios

  • Presentation and practical application of the AGREE tool – another metric for evaluating green analytical procedures

  • Discussion of White Analytical Chemistry (WAC)

  • Discussion of the latest green analytical metrics, including BAGI and other emerging tools.
